The personnel involved in Headset is tantalising to say the least, Pole’s Scape imprint bringing together Plug Research head honcho Allen Avanessian in collaboration with the fabulous Jimmy 'Dntel' Tamborello and Shadow Huntaz, Daedelus, Beans, John Tejada, Subtitle, Nobody and Thomas Fehlmann for a project that’s as varied and free flowing as one would expect with such a pool of talent at its disposal. The primary form toyed with here is Hip Hop, as you might imagine, gliding through its various permutations and possibilities through the vision of each of the collaboratrs involved. “Outward Sound”, featuring Daedelus, is the most free-flowing of the pieces on board, a plundered jazz flute slivering through skippy percussion and velvet basslines, topped off by just the right amount of Piano and Fender Rhodes to send you off someplace else, in the best possible way. “Black Before”, the Shadow Huntaz vehicle, strips the body of the track down to awesome bassline and sparse percussion, oddly tribal in its purpose, resolutely tough (don't forget Shadow Huntaz debued on Plug Research back in 1998). Beans’ track 'Jaw Modulation' is a serious return to form for this ex Anti Popper, a slow crawl into the belly of alien electro jazz. 'Breathe Contrails' feels closest to the wide open lush subtleties of Dntel's prior album but given a head wrecking poetic slant this time. A varied and not altogether obvious collection of skewed hip hop pieces, “Spacesettings” is an album that burrows deeper into your headspace with every listen. Highly recommended.
