ELEPHANT9 - DodoVoodoo, Rune Grammofon

Look at that album title: Dodovoodoo. This was never going to be anything other than an exercise in progged-up jazz/funk fusionism. Howard Moon would be freaking out over this. Elephant9 is the collaborative outlet for Supersilent and Humcrush synthesist Stale Storlokken, The Shining drummer Torstein Lofthaus, and Nikolai Eilertsen of Norwegian chart-toppers The National Bank (think Coldplay mixed with the Brand New Heavies and you're about right) on keyboards. Thanks to some far-out sounds from the two keysman, these tracks take on a psychedelic, '70s inspired sound, but the bluesy licks and swaggering rhythms put this a little too far outside the parameters of the cooler, krautrock influenced side of that sound to be particularly fashionable. Instead, you end up with some brainache-inducing tempo jolts and an album that comes across as a single, long offcut from one of Goblin's finest soundtracks (you know, the good ones: when they didn't let Dario Argento get involved). Another fine piece of Nordic jazz from Rune Grammofon then, and the recording's rather lovely too, all committed live to analogue tape machines in the studio.
