THE OWL SERVICE - A Garland Of Song, Southern

The Owl Service score points for the Alan Garner-derived name, plus their referencing of cult Brit films like Psychomania and Die Screaming, Marianne on their Cine (Director's Cut), but should probably have those points docked immediately for being the 465th band to cover Karen Dalton's 'Katie Cruel' in the past 12 months or so. The Cine release transpires to be somewhat misleading as a signpost towards The Owl Service's musical preoccupations however, as this is a very traditional folk album, which if you exclude the use of electric guitar is pretty much as by-the-book as these things get. As ever, it's probably Greg Weeks' fault - he and his Espers colleagues tend to be the enablers for this kind of maypole straddling, Morris dancing retro-folk, and A Garland Of Song competes with the recent Fern Knight album for the best 18th century folk album of the year. To demonstrate just how rooted in things past this is, not only will you find yourself encountering Anne Briggs-style a cappellas, Child ballad recordings, and a song about Dick Turpin. Lovely.
