DAVID KARSTEN DANIELS - Fear Of Flying, Fat Cat

A follow-up to his Fat Cat debut, Sharp Teeth, David Karsten Daniels' Fear Of Flying shows a marked improvement in the power of his writing. To begin with, on 'Wheelchairs' Daniels' voice is at a low hush, with any semblance of instrumentation making itself even less apparent. It's still a mightily powerful intro to the album though, and brings to mind one of the more maudlin ballads from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's repertoire. By the time we arrive at 'Martha Ann' the mood picks up dramatically - setting up an exuberant country rocker buoyed on by strings, harmonised male-female vocals and a crunching electric guitar solo. You'd never know these were only home recordings, and god help the neighbours during the sessions that led to 'Falling Down' and the distorted drum clatter of 'A Myoclonic Jerk'. It's the more intimate moments that prove slightly less convincing than their noisy counterparts: while Daniels has little trouble setting up multi-instrumental hoedowns (like 'Oh, Heaven Isn't Real' for example) it's on the quieter, more deliberated over moments like 'In My Child Mind You Were A Lion' and 'The Caretaker' that you're less likely to feel fully engaged. There's still plenty to keep coming back to though, and David karsten Daniels remains a songwriter worth keeping tabs on.
