OUR BROKEN GARDEN - Lost Sailor, Bella Union

Anna Broendsted scored herself a lucky break when she picked Bella Union to be her very first friend on MySpace. The label eventually wound up offering her a recording contract, starting with this debut EP, a six-track collection of gentle, well crafted songs with a bit of a maritime theme pulling them together. Broendsted's songwriting isn't anything especially novel, though her whispery voice is instantly adorable, and those winsome string arrangements are very easy to fall for, sounding especially wonderful on the melancholy pop hooks of 'The Blinding' and the dramatic chamber music of 'Ashes', which has more than a hint of Susanna & The Magical Orchestra about it.
