There's already been three or so other solo guitar releases doing the rounds this week, so Matt Baldwin's Paths Of Ignition faces something of an uphill struggle to hold my interest. Yet hold my interest it does, in part because it switches the format a little, incorporating electric guitars, the occasional drone and even vocals. Matt Baldwin is probably hitherto best known for having contributed to the 2006 Tompkins Square compilation Berkeley Guitar, but reveals just how skilful and multi-faceted a musician he is on this excellent full-length. In addition to superb original compositions like 'Eulogy & Dark' or the incredible quarter-hour virtuoso piece 'Rainbow' there are a couple of reinterpretations on here too (in fact 'Rainbow' itself takes heavy inspiration from Yes). A cover of Neu!'s 'Weissensee' is handled with real skill and poise, combining lilting acoustics and acerbic electric leads that brings to mind Voice Of The Seven Woods' debut album. Elsewhere, Judas Priest's 'Winter' undergoes a fairly severe stylistic overhaul, all of which contributes to an album that remains about as versatile as a record focused on the acoustic guitar could be.
