Wiganer John Fairhurst has quite a bio. Apparently he's spent recent years in various parts of South East Asia, honing his craft and spending time immersed in an assortment of different cultures. Having come home, Fairhurst recruited the services of likeminded local talents (among them Nancy Elizabeth and Denis Jones) and set about making this fine album of instrumental guitar rags and blues bar stomps. So yes, this is yet another guitar solo record, but it doesn't really sound a great deal like the rest of the stuff out there at the moment. While the instrumentation clearly has elements of American bluegrass, you can hear the work of artists like Davy Graham and Bert Jansch in here too. Take for example the wonderful 'Passing Time' a duet for Fairhurst's guitar and nancy Elizabeth's nimble harp plucks: it sounds far more rooted in the traditions of British folk than anything you'd hear on most records of this ilk. While we're back into more familiar slide guitar territory on 'Yew Tree Blues', but it's not long before Fairhurst's visiting other cultures, as on experimental, Eastern droner 'Shivver'. Joys Of Spring never stays still for so long as to become stuck in its ways, making this a real pleasure to listen to, start to finish.
