This boy-girl duo specialise in a kind of sublime, childlike exploratory pop music, largely focussed around the amiable sense of wonderment inherent to Yoshimi Tomida's vocal. Their previous album (on Audio Dregs) was titled "Lullatone Plays Pajama Pop Pour Vous" and featured tracks with titles like 'Sleepytime Samba', immediately giving you an idea of the kind of fragile, twee territory that this band explore. But coming to us on Room 40's Someone Good' offshoot, "The Bedtime Beat" is also a layered album that holds an array of intriguing production techniques and melodic inventions up its sleeve - the result is a small and perfectly formed collection of off-kilter lullabies to make your heart melt. Although the lyrics on "Your Snore" are almost unbearably twee, the music itself will send you into a spin of hazy wonderment, found sounds and a solitary organ making for a reduced tingling sensation that we just adore. There are elements here that remind us of old Grand Royal operatives Cibo Matto, but the music of Lullatone is much more compact and much more successful - reducing the music to a gentle caress of smart arrangements and a padded, shimmering sound palette. It gives off the same kind of aural loveliness and out-of time comfort you'll get from listening to an old wind-up music box, gently lulling you into a deep and blissful slumber. At just over 20 minutes long its a short and sweet affair, but by the time you reach the tender whisper of final track 'Oyasumi' you'll most likely already be off with the fairies... Lovely stuff, and highly recommended.
