SVARTBAG - Svartbag, RUMP

This Danish drone-rock band cite krautrock and British shoegaze as their influences - which is a very 2008-friendly statement. While you can certainly hear elements of a group like Faust in the heavy, experimental plod of 'Black Capricorn', you'd be hard-pressed to find anything resembling shoegaze in here. Thankfully. The gothic, low-end propulsion of these instrumentals defines the band, while the guitars come out with a repetitive, yet actually quite complex armoury of space rock riffs. If there is a complaint to be raised, it's that the album just sounds a bit too clean for its own good. A little Acid Mothers/Bardo Pond-style filth wouldn't go astray, because as a result of its comparitive cleanliness, the album misses out on that all important Hawkwind-in-a-blender sound that certain other groups operating in the field belt out. All that said, quarter-hour jams like 'Billy Name' flail about with a bit more subtlety and sophistication than most one-chord, stoner odysseys.
