One half of French duo Natural Snow Buildings, Mehdi Amaziane returns for a second outing as Twinsistermoon on Levels & Crossings. Actually, this is the second time this album has been available, though the initial run came to a total of 36 copies, meaning unless you're a blood relative of Amaziane, this is going to be new to you. Anyone interested in the most subterranean music to emanate from the American underground will find something to love about this record. Amaziane is equally at home penning, Drake/Bunyan-style pastoral folk songs in the vein of 'Death Head Moth' and 'The Black Under' as he is spinning mind-frazzling sonic experiments like 'Javelin Of Pestilence'. Strictly speaking there are probably two entirely different albums in here (this is a long, long record) but the more avant-garde moments nicely sabotage the hippy-ish atmosphere cast by the more naturalistic, acoustic pieces. As a next stage in Twinsistermoon's evolution it'd be nice to hear music that marries these two approaches, but in the meantime, the likes of 'Shadow Mirror' will have to suffice, starting out like a murky Grouper composition but concluding by tapping into the sort of sugary darkness that characterises Marissa Nadler's music. Given the softness and high-pitched timbres of his voice, it's actually pretty hard to accept that Amaziane isn't a lady, but then the gender ambiguity only adds to the surreal allure of these already pretty bizarre recordings. Highly recommended.
