Crystal Castles have been dividing opinion for a while now, and based on this album you can see why they've been the subject of a love/hate relationship with the media. For one thing there's the irritatingly serendipitous set of circumstances surrounding the band's rise to fame: after "accidentally" recording the track 'Alice Practice' and nonchalantly putting it on MySpace "for some friends to download" the band somehow became the subject of serious label interest. The parameters of the Crystal Castles sound aren't exactly far-reaching. The music on this eponymous debut is another permutation on the 8-bit synth sounds that were so profuse back in the days when it was discovered you could compose music on a C64 or Gameboy, except Crystal Castles have plundered the soundchip out of an Atari 5200 for their source material, and rather than tackling the resultant sounds from a purely retro angle as has previously tended to be the case, this duo incorporate the sonic language of videogames into a very modern, punk-pop inspired approach. In all fairness, on paper that is quite annoying, but tracks like 'Crimewave' and that "accidental" A&R hit 'Alice Practice' prove themselves entirely loveable, and 'Vanished' sounds like a meeting between Erasure and a sideways-scrolling shoot 'em up. Predictably however, the album's blend of Galaxian-style sound effects and shouty nu-rave songwriting has its limitations, especially when drawn out over a fifty-two minute odyssey, as is the case here.
