I'll Be Black (1967-2007)
2CD
Focussing happily on Ansell Collins’ less well known production work from Maxwell Avenue, Channel One in 1979, Moll Selekta unearth another gem of a release. With vocalists of the calibre of Ansell himself, Roland Burrell, and the perennial Tony Tuff, DJ contributions from Jah Thomas and Mr. Mystic, and five dubs this is a rounded and impressive set. Jah Thomas sets up over Mr Tuff’s lovely ease up the pressure and there’s an ital, shocking steppers "French dub" of the same to further enchant the sound system massive. Ansell himself sings it Gregory Isaacs style on "Here Comes The Rain", yet with a rootsy edge on "Tonight is The Night". Remember that Ansell wrote Stalag 17 at Winston Riley’s Techniques label, and played keys on more important records than anyone except perhaps Jackie Mittoo – great opportunity to check his work from the undisputed heyday of steppers roots.
