ANTONELLI - Soulkiller, Italic

Back in stock. On this, his sixth album, Stefan Schwander feels the need to present an actual warning (with an exclamation mark no less) on the packaging, simply to proclaim his exclusive use of hardware on the record. Apparently all this was committed direct to tape with no overdubs or computers involved. House and techno records made in this manner tend to break out of the box a little in structural terms, feeling looser and more organic, but there's always a danger of repetition and stagnation, with a producer resorting to dogged loop tweaking over the course of ten minutes or so. Fortunately, no such narrative faux pas is made during Soulkiller, which instead references the upper tier of old-school dancefloor production. The Italic label blog declares that the sheer roughness of these on-the-spot productions is in someway comparable to The Stooges. Of course, that's absolute nonsense. Instead, pieces like 'When Terry Sings' and 'The Arrival' fashion rather warm, silky house grooves, only for solid jackers 'Hamilton' and 'Cold Entertainment!' to keep the album's flow varied and tailored to dancefloor needs. Schwander possibly saves best till last, withholding the ten-minute liquid bass epic 'The Name Of This Track Is Bobby Konders' right up until the final slot, finishing off an exciting collection of realtime productions and old-fashioned drum machine sequences with some style.
