You may remember the Paw Tracks band First Nation from a while back: ever wondered what happened to them? Well, turns out they changed their name to Rings while making this rather splendid album - which incidentally involved production assistance from Kristin Anna Valtysdottirr, formerly of Mùm. As is obligatory with the Paw Tracks crowd, Rings take highly articulate American pop music and reframe it within an experimental, playful sound world. 'All Right Peace' follows the peculiar rhythmic formats of Animal Collective and throws in some almost Newsom-esque schoolgirl freak-folk vocals, which far from sounding outmoded and irritating work a treat against the spare musical backdrop. Using a piano, a bit of guitar and some extremely simplistic drumming, the all-girl trio set about warping their songs with a few strategically placed effects and studio tricks. Sensibly, Rings keep it simple when it comes to that sort of thing, as on the hollered, trapped-down-a-well vocals of 'Double Thanks'. While the songs themselves might be a little too angular to absorb fully after an initial run, there's a potent cumulative effect to Black Habit that makes it a real grower, and another excellent addition to the Paw Tracks catalogue.
