A terrific new single from the reliably awesome Matt Valentine and Erika Elder, with an A-side that captures the duo laying down a supremely reined in version of live favourite 'Old Black Joe', a nineteenth century American folk song. If ever there was an easy entry point into the MV & EE universe, this is it. Erika Elder's vocals sound more considered and expressive than perhaps ever before, with an incredible piece of guitar work from Valentine, matching a bluesy fingerpicked acoustic against spectral slide phrases. It's a magical recording, sounding warmer and more developed than the version that appeared on last year's Eye In The Pines LP. The B-side finds the duo hooking up with The Wolfpack, whose personnel include Willy Lane on lead guitar and Death Chants on backing vocals. 'Huna Cosm' reflects a different side of MV & EE's work, charting their exploration of the more melodious recesses of psych improvisation. For these seven inches at least, Valentine and Elder seem content to dismiss the discord and distortion of old in favour of finely crafted, melancholic blues. Let's hope they keep this stuff coming... Limited Copies!
