I miss cLOUDDEAD, I really do, and I'm not afraid to get to the top of a large building (not too large though or I might get scared) and shout about it until my lungs hurt. In the space of a mere two albums the trio achieved way more than most bands achieve in a lifetime, and those albums still stand as milestones in the abstract hip hop genre. Since then Anticon has moved brashly into the whole indie/folk/tronica genres but then those of us who were really listening could hear that all along. 'Level Live Wires' is Nosdam's latest full length and some have commented that it owes more to shoegazing and electronica than hip hop - but to me it sounds like a logical progression, and if you listen carefully it's not really that far removed from 'Ten' or the band's self titled debut. The crumbling tape recorded sounds and downsampled beats are still present, the occasional rapping, the destroyed instruments, the field recordings, it's just framed in a slightly different way. Instead of the b-boy lite basslines and looping drum breaks we are treated to ever-growing drones and waves of noise, not unlike those of Ben Frost actually; just check out the humorously titled 'Fat Hooks' and listen to the fizzing pads grow into a cacophony of noise and fuzzy synthesis - you could almost replace it for guitars and end up with a My Bloody Valentine track. What we're left with is an album which doesn't mind sidestepping the genre game, there are still traces of hip hop and there's no doubt that Nosdam has what made cLOUDDEAD so great in the first place, it's just nice that he's prepared to carry on moving on. Easily the best thing on Anticon for some time now, this needs to be snapped up immediately by fans and newcomers alike. Recommended.
