THE HUMAN BELL - The Human Bell, Thrill Jockey

Lungfish's Nathan Bell and Arbouretum's David Heuman team up for this first album together (although 2006's self-titled CD-R EP found the duo taking their first steps toward collaboration). Both artists have popped up on other artists' albums, with Heuman's CV boasting work alongside Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Cass McCombs and Dave Pajo's Papa M. It should come as no surprise that this record sounds so seasoned then, sidestepping the more conventional aspects of post-rock, Human Bell weave a timbrally diverse web of instrumental textures, sometimes fashioning the most articulate of blues numbers from simple electric guitar duels, and at others piecing together far more elaborate arrangements (featuring kalimba, vibraphone, and perhaps most exotic of all, quartz singing bowl). The final three pieces proves to be especially strong: 'Hanging From The Rafters' exhibits the repetitive, minimalist traits of krautrock, while the ensuing 'Ephaphatha (Be Opened)' explores more freeform, experimental terrain, only for album closer 'The Singing Trees' to run through a whole range of dynamics and emotions, laying claim to both the album's most tranquil and most incendiary moments.
