Compiled and mixed by Dego, this new Sonar Kollektiv compilation follows on from previous instalments in the Mixing series from Jazzanova and Ame. This disc serves as a map of 4Hero's formative influences, incorporating old funk, reggae and disco classics, while always keeping one foot firmly planted in the now, featuring more contemporary cuts from Dabrye, Waajeed and Georgia Anne Muldrow. After opening on Bootsy Collins, it's not long before Dego finds his way to segueing from J Dilla into Raymond Scott - not a manoeuvre you'd hear often, but it's a splendid connection to make nonetheless. As the mix enters its second half we shift from Scientist into The Skatelites, then onto Patrice Rushen's grandiose disco anthem 'Message In The Music', all carried off with an incredibly fluid aplomb. Clocking in at a conservative forty-two minutes or so, this is a good deal more concise than your average mix CD, but it manages to cover an awful lot of ground while never feeling overstuffed, and that is most certainly an admirable quality.
