What is it with Ninja Tune at the moment? After months of under-the-radar activity they're finally hitting us with some serious bombs as they edge closer to all things dubbed out and grimey, something which comes to a head with this seriously jaw-dropping 12" from the always-excellent Ghislain Poirier. The Canadian producer has come a long way since the early days on 12k (does anyone still remember that?) but to our mind each release has shown him improving still further, and 'Blazin' has got to rank as his most crushing work to date with his unique skittering beats n' bass playing counterpoint to Face-T's shocking flow. There's a definite dancehall flavour but this is dancehall circa 2020 with squelching synthesizers and a wonky rhythm that pokes at your sides until they start gyrating. Even better however is the news that the two remixes here (from the Bug and DJ C no less) are almost as stunning as the original track, with the Bug forging a production that hits just as hard as last week's killer 'Poison Dart'. Throbbing analogue bass and evil synthesizers play havoc with the vocal allowing the mix to stand effortlessly against Poirier's, offering something genuinely different into the cauldron. Interestingly though DJ C's is even more removed as the Bostonian producer gives the track a grinning upbeat flavour with the addition of squealing 8-bit sounds and a double-time beat. Easily the best 12" on Ninja Tune for years this is one every DJ needs in their box, something to spice up the party and the front room equally this winter... huge recommendation.
