I don't know what it is about kids today but rather than embracing the rock 'n roll excesses of, well, The Darkness, there seems more of a willingness for young happenin' folk in New York (that didn't work did it?) to step their flat left feet into a world more resonant with that of freaky folksters the Animal Collective or avant-pop also rans Grizzly Bear. Yeasayer are yet another band who fall into this category but luckily they actually pull it off quite well, blending a certain tribalism with the Bowie-gone-wrong soul rock of TV on the Radio to blisteringly accurate effect. Check the opener 'Sunrise' with its 80s analogue throb combined with a tribal stomp it's impossible to ignore - and while this might sound somewhat cheesy it kind of works for them, coming across closer to Brian Wilson than Nick Kershaw. While occasionally the vocal affectations are slightly too close to TV on the Radio they rollick through 'All Hour Cymbals' with nailbiting pace and what sounds like genuine conviction, and the band's energy is surprisingly quite infectious. Good stuff from a band I get the feeling will go from strength to strength.
