CASSY - Nil Desperandum, Perlon

Back in stock. Cassy Britton's second 12" for Perlon (a follow-up to 2005's My Auntie) is a weighty two-tracker. 'Soul Saviour' is the more minimal of the two surviving off a hammering beat that doesn't feel the need to evolve much over the course of the side, while Cassy's trademark vocal floats across it (intoning "Save my soul" as an intermittently repeating mantra). Far more appealing is 'More Policemen On The Beat', which kicks off with a skipping drum pattern that brings to mind Villalobos' impeccable beat programming. Soon some jazzy chords stab into the frame and the track begins to fill up with detail, even taking in a bit of an echo chamber detour towards the end. Very nice indeed.
