Timbreland Recordings, a loose affiliation of songwriters and musicians scattered across North-West England and Scotland have been enjoying the limelight of late. Thanks in-part to the precocious talent of 23 year old Manchester songstress Nancy Elizabeth, the label here seek to continue their recent run of success with this introductory salvo from Dan Haywood's New Hawks. The five songs on this EP would perhaps best be described as Hebridean country-tinged folk; bedecked with lone strings, steel strung guitar, brushed drums, and Fender Rhodes organ. What sets this new band apart from the swathes of nu-folk hopefuls you ask? Luckily this EP's secret weapon is the vernacular-infused voice of band leader Dan Haywood. It is Haywood's drenched delivery which ultimately carries the EP's five fleeting tracks. In 'Lochmaddy', Haywood narrates a folk tale over the most minimal accompaniment, allowing for his skewed tale of a man who brings the common cold to the island of Lochmaddy to immediately take root.
