DOG FACED HERMANS - Mental Blocks For All Ages, MISSISSIPPI

We're not sure how Portland Oregon based label Mississippi manages it but they seem to be seeking out some of the most unusually beautiful music we've ever heard. It's as if each release is an event, something either pulled from the depths of history or something more modern but equally as unpredictable - in just a short space of time we've had 'The Thai Orchestra' LP, the incredible 'I Don't Feel At Home in this World Anymore' compilation and an album from Portland-based improv/jazz outfit Evolutionary Jass Band, each one of them totally different but equally enjoyable. It feels like the guys behind the label just have a genuine love of music without necessarily caring too much about what style it does or doesn't fit into, and that's something we can't help but admire. This latest release continues the ardent trend-bucking with a re-issue of the 1991-released and long out of print album from punk band Dog Face Hermans. Eventually and after two more albums the band would dissolve leaving members to join other projects (most notably guitarist Andy Moor who joined legendary Dutch experimental act The Ex) but this album sees them on absolutely top form, and has never sounded quite as essential as it does now. Formed in Scotland and later re-located to Amsterdam the band manages to take a distinctly US punk sound and re-frame it with a willing experimental edge that gives away their close ties to The Ex. With anarchic shouty female vocals, abrasive guitars and most oddly a brass section we get some kind of hybrid sound which feels linked somehow to the early 90s Kill Rock Stars sound (Bikini Kill etc) but at the same time it is defiantly European. This is my kind of punk rock music, and has the balls and the hooks I'm sure to renew interest in a much overlooked act - with the Gossip topping the charts the time has never been more right. Huge recommendation and of course very limited!
