VARIOUS / SUBLIME FREQUENCIES - Thai Pop Spectacular 1960s-1980s, Sublime Frequencies

Back in stock! This is just so great - a new super-obscure collection of weird and wondeful Thai pop music from the supremely good Sublime Frequencies crew. And not only that - we're honestly pretty sure that it's one of label's most charming, interesting and delicious compilations yet - taking us into a world of alien pop music that's just too f*cked up and too inspirational for words. I can't say I'm well versed in the world of Thai pop music, but from what I hear on this disc (which spans from the 1960s all the way to the 1980s in just under an hour!) it manages to take influence from disco pop, experimental electronics (really.), funk, jazz, crooning ballads and more - but what makes this more interesting than so many other compilations of its kind is that these super-obscure acts never fail to just miss the point slightly. When they're doing disco, it's just not quite disco and when they're doing funk, it's just not quite funk - it's better than that, less referential and slightly spannered in the best way possible - and to someone sitting in an office somewhere in inner city Manchester, there really couldn't be anything more exciting. With the usual expansive liner notes from Alan Bishop (along with Mark Gergis) which detail how the pair came across this defiantly unusual pop music, it doesn't feel like you're walking through this landscape totally unguided and by the end of the album's 21 tracks you'll genuinely feel like you've learned something about genius pop music from the very outer margins. Just skip to the mutant disco of 'Kwuan Tai Duew Luk Puen' which opens with the kind of fractured synthesis you'd expect to hear on a Delia Derbyshire record before bursting into a 4/4 beat, or the sleazy electro-funk of 'Mia Rai Duen' which I reckon you could get away playing out at virtually any party i can imagine. There really aren't words to describe the kind of music crammed onto this epic disc, suffice to say that it has re-assured us that we're in the right industry. We love this stuff, and chances are you're going to get just as slack-jawed about it as us, so you know what to do. Who knows, the sun might just carry on shining long enough for us to get some proper mileage out of this - it's music just tailor-made for those gorgeous balmy evenings. Magical stuff - a huge recommendation.
