LV FT ERROL BELLOT & DANDELION - Globetrotting / Takeover [dub], Hyperdub

Back in stock! Vinyl finally available! Parallels have been cast for a while between Kode 9's Hyperdub imprint and Basic Channel's peerless Burial Mix. One online shop even went as far as to confuse Rhythm & Sound's label with Hyperdub act Burial - suggesting that Burial Mix in actual fact stood for a "Burial Remix", despite the fact that the former pre-dates the latter by a good decade. Confused? Well, that's understandable - and one can only imagine that Steve Goodman has the same sort of reverence for Mark Ernestus and Mauritz Von Oswald as the rest of us, meaning that if his crew was to be associated with any other labels out there, it may as well be to one of the very best. Which brings us neatly onto this latest release on Hyperdub, the debut release for London four piece "L.V.", featuring the vocals of S&G luminary Errol Bellot and Free King Sound's Dandelion. The A-side track "Globetrotting" is a classic Roots reduction that keeps things relatively straight - the odd reverb malfunction and stretched bassline the only real indications that this is a contemporary piece, though with repeat plays production subtleties start to emerge as the clever progressions start to lodge themselves in your mind. "Takeover (Dub)" on the flip is much more instantly recognisable as a Hyperdub joint - you can almost here the valves of a vintage organ breathing for air as a squashed bassline and padded woodblock percussion arrange themselves for a track that could *almost* have found itself on a classic Rhythm & Sound 10" circa 2001. "Almost" because this is no straight copyist sh*t - L.V. appear to have a distinct, rootsy idea of what it is they want to achieve, and there is an acoustic emphasis here that has little in common with the standard digital machinations of dubstep or any of its many variants. Hyperdub is a label that will forever keep you on your toes - and for that reason in itself it deserves your constant, unwavering attention. The fact that the music it brings to the world is so good is just a bonus - but one that makes this new release as indispensable as its many pristine predecessors. ESSENTIAL PURCHASE.
