CRESCENT - Little Waves, Fat Cat

I feel a bit silly that I haven't managed to hear Crescent before, apparently they've been around for 14 years and I haven't heard a sausage from them, which is odd because this sort of thing is right up my street. The Bristol-based six-piece have been away for four years, and are now back with their Fat Cat debut (Fat Cat seem to be really hoovering up the quality acts at the moment!) which is a very lovely collection of homespun acoustic songs in the vein of The Pastels or Movietone (with whom they share a few members, funnily enough). You know the sort of thing, music that sounds like it was recorded to get away from the rain outside (how fitting considering the rather terrible British weather we're seeing right now) and music written by people who still read books and watch black and white films. Yep there's some thought gone into this one, and the sensitivity, the bare-faced brazen attitude that says a big 'f*ck you' to the current musical climate (celebrity, bullish ignorance) is what should win over a good proportion of music fans. At the same time I'm listening to this with a glorious nostalgia, I'm a huge follower of the 90s lo-fi movement Crescent seem umbilically connected to (they originally came up with Flying Saucer Attack and Third Eye Foundation dontcha know) and these guys give me a tingly feeling that makes me remember those good old days. With songs you'll be humming for weeks (if not months) to come, this might not be an obvious record or particularly instant but its charm is in its sincerity, and give it some time, you won't regret it. Lovely.
