Consolidating our admiration for his increasingly crackling output, Smyglyssna delivers this truly inspired follow-up to the 'U Don't Jump..' EP. Containg older material than that of the jiggy-hiphop-troid booters of the aforementioned EP, 'Departures' tiptoes along much more subtle terrain. The opening 'The Gazebo' is mesmerising - somehow reminiscent of the late night pulses of Wagon Christ's classic 'Phat Lab Nightmare' LP, each and every chord and pop solidifies a warming to tone and atmosphere. Sublime. 'Night Sea' is equally astonishing - think of Monolake at their deepest with the percussion reduced to a defracted patter- a late night emission of deeply refined tone and whispering melodies that sounds incredibly full and deeply moving, without resorting to the more cliched "romantic" notions of electronic composition. 'Suburban Rooftops' is the most beat-driven of the 6 tracks here - what sounds like a crunched-up drum section (a la Funkstorung) intertwines itself with chords that could have come out of Detroit several years ago...strips of flickering neon and mangled machinery come to mind. The standout track, however, is the EP's closing 'you'd be amazed if you knew' - and you would if you heard it - rumbling emissions wobble at low volume before a solitary Fender Rhodes lights up the track and the entire room with a story of reflection and gratifying melancholy. A kind of lush that's hard to pin down - unique, dignified, out there on it's own.
