With Anticon completely giving up on being in anyway associated with hip hop whether avant or traditional it's with massive anticipation that this album is finally in my grasp. Mayo's debut was the little heard '55 Stories' first issued in 1999 when it was a heap harder to get Anticon records in the UK. That album was a killer collection of dusted downtempo breaks tracks rubbing up against some very choice samples, a big influence on the Bully sound. Eight years later and 'Still Alive' does not disappoint; the true hip hop instrumental template has been sidetracked as this album's touches of instrumentation whether electronic or acoustic add much to Mayo's reputation. 'Post Reformat's heavy heavy drums fuse with minimal synth touches and snare scratch percussion and then 'Easily Distracted' offers more electronic touches that touch on Alias's best work circa 'Muted'. 'May Days' is a sad and lonely drive down a roadside littered with weeping clarinets and drunkard drummers, just too beautiful. 'The Windham Song' starts off resequencing John Carpenters lead synth line from Assault On Precinct 13 before it drops a heavy DJ Signify styled beat then the distorted guitar and saxophone drops in, killer track. That's just the first four tracks by which time I'm sold. If it's been a while since you bought an Anticon joint then 'Still Alive' is your route back in. Up there with the best early albums this pioneering label have produced.
