This is a really strange release, I'll say that now - the music aside, Thrill Jockey have packaged up this latest record from Lungfish frontman Daniel Higgs along with a nice hardback book of his paintings and acrostic poems. Don't know what acrostic poems are? Well let me explain, they're poems made using letters which form a word, for example BIBLE becomes - Belief Is Lovingly Encoded, geddit? Well it's really quite well done and very poignant at times, with the artwork fitting rather hauntingly with the occasionally religious and at all times mischievous poems. So, that's the book then, it's not to everyone's tastes I'm sure but comes as a welcome accompaniment to the very strange album, which is somewhere in-between American Primative folk music and the outsider ramblings of everyone's favourite strange-bloke Jandek. Throughout the album the 'quality' of the recordings themselves become a focal point of the music; the saturated tape, the clipping of guitars - this tempts us to listen to the recording quality just as much as the music itself, and I can't say that's a bad thing. I'm something of a cassette tape fetishist so music this unashamedly lo-fi is welcomed with open arms, and the fact that the music itself is so absorbing is merely the icing on the cake. It seems quite strange that Thrill Jockey is jumping into the 'freak-folk' thing so wholeheartedly, giving an album which is very likely to totally polarise listeners the true deluxe treatment, but it's treatment which will surely come as much appreciated by fans of the music. A truly beguiling package, musically and visually, and rather essential for the more exploratory music fan...
