UNIQUE 3 / AUTECHRE
The Theme - Autechre Mix
10"
If anyone would dare better Unique 3's classic bleep track "The Theme" it could only be Autechre. The arc of influence is obvious - "the Theme" was originally released back in 1989 and is a seminal piece of shefield Bleep - perhaps the finest track of its kind. Important for the Warp label in its formative years, the sound was a hybrid of jacking Chicago templates and skewed Acid lines, uk style. The prospect of an Autechre re-working was surely nothing more than a fantasy for those of us brought up on the sound - so when we heard about this extremely limited release (500 copies for the world the sales notes say..) we could hardly believe it. In true Autechre style the reworking mixes an evident reverance and respect for the original with a subtle shift of emphasis as the track progresses. The skewed acid chimes of the original are intact - albeit slower and more ghostly - the percusive tom's are present and correct, but as the track develops things start to gradually degrade into a low-end beast that's just about the best thing Sean Booth and Rob Brown have produced in years. The bassline is so rugged and frayed it almost blew our speakers the first time we played it - and with every few bars the track slowly descends that little bit further into a murky, squashed, BASS tundra that's terrifyingly good. In all honesty we must have played this track a dozen times since it landed this morning - playing LOUD is a must. The Zilla mix on the flip is, if anything, more abstract - a robotic chug through reduced acid as seen through b-boy eyes - brilliantly produced and another track that lends itself all too easily to the upper regions of your volume dial. KILLER!!!!
