Moving away from the pedestrian electro and IDM-influenced beatmaking that signified his early output, Shad T Scott has spent the last few years honing his evident love for the Drexciyan legacy into a production line that's emitted one killer release after another. But here, at long last, is the Gosub album we've all been waiting for - full to bursting with the kind of Japanese-Telecom-meets-Other-People-Place loveliness we find impossible to resist. "Her Machine" starts the album as it means to go on with a hook so primal you feel instantly familiar with it - those sparkling analogue synths pairing up with a dislocated secretarial/robotic narration and string progressions that are so sweet and nostalgic it's impossible to resist them. "Laugh Track" nods towards the sound of Dopplereffekt, a wobbly analogue bassline setting the framework for the nerdy laugh mentioned in the title, those synth hooks appearing once again to take you someplace else, while "Blind World" is just sublime - the sound of delicately punched keys instantly evoking the spirit of James Stinson's Other People Place - a project we hold very close to our hearts here. "Watchers From The Black Universe" may well be written in homage to the aquatic operators Shad T Scott clearly admires so much - but the production is so bright and the melodies so timeless it's a gripe that holds little weight - when the music's as enjoyable as this, who cares? Brilliant stuff.
