POPNONAME - White Album, Italic

This debut from Popnoname begins with a slow-building vocal piece 'No Doubt' which over the course of its oening few minutes gradually blooms into a fully-fledged dancefloor stomp-along, boasting choppy string riffs and a hammering rhythm section. Following on from that 'Tremolo' hits the ground running with a healthy tangle of crisp 909-style drums and squelching basslines. Taking the pace downwards slightly is 'Still', a vocal track hinging on warm, melancholic synth pads and a compelling knack for melody. The album very successfully exploits various permutations of these ingredients up until 'Kapital', the most sophisticated - and for that matter satisfying - composition here. It's not only more textured than the preceding tracks, it's uptempo too, making it a prime candidate for filling up dancefloors. The remaining tracks fulfil a similarly cinematic brief, the album even drawing to a close with the lush, Pop Ambient-style layering of 'Taken'.
