VALENTIN SILVESTROV - Symphony No.6, ECM

Performed by the SWR Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra this is Ukranian contemporary classical composer Valentin Silvestrov’s Symphony No.6 and should just about be indispensable for any Arvo Part or Alfred Schnittke junkies out there (I know there’s some of you). With the Mahler-like ‘Symphony No.5’ Silvestrov made a real name for himself in the world of contemporary classical music, and this is just as powerful, and performed here under the guidance of conductor Andrey Boreyko sounds as blistering as a piece this intense should do. Technical without being tiring and emotional without being forceful this is just what I want from my long-form classical compositions, it manages to take you through a whole gamut of emotions without allowing you to drift of or lose interest – quite some feat for an hour long piece. While not something I’d recommend for the uninitiated, this is a fabulous piece for fans of any of the aforementioned composers and a welcome addition to the growing ECM canon.
