SEPTEMBER COLLECTIVE (BARBARA MORGENSTERN / STEFAN SCHNEIDER / PAUL WIRKUS) - All The Birds Were Anarchists, MOSZ

The September Collective is the collaborative moniker of To Rococo Rot's Stefan Schneider, German electronic-pop superstar Barbara Morgenstern and Polish experimental chap Paul Wirkus, and together believe it or not they make gorgeous electronic listening music. You might have caught the band's debut on Geographic Recordings a while back, but where that album only managed to hit the spot a few times, 'All the Birds Were Anarchists' seems to take me to all the right places and is the rarest of things - an electronic album that is beautiful and interesting from start to finish. It's been some time actually since something so subtle, and soft hearted has caught my ear in this way but I shouldn't be surprised - the pedigree here is unshakable. There's still the analogue warmth of To Rococo Rot in there somewhere, the unmistakable piano treatments of Morgenstern and Wirkus' keen ear for experimentation but where 'All the Birds...' really excels is in the simple, effective track construction. Nothing ever outstays its welcome, instead the tracks twinkle and caress the senses, breezing in and out of your life quickly and amply, never resulting to idle repetition to fill space. You may have become a little bored with that very typical Berlin sound but The September Collective have sidestepped this somehow coming up with an album that takes influence from the scene without necessarily fitting in to it totally. This is music for relaxing the robot soul, and music to calm the most savage of electronic beasts - there's feeling in them there synthesizers; let's all fall into an electric dream. Highly recommended.
