Here's an interesting one - if you've come across the Sublime Frequencies cds before you'll know what you're letting yourself in for, but this isn't your standard Sublime Frequency compilation, this is an all-singing all-dancing DVD release. Just as the field recordings compilations sounded like someone walking around with a tape recorder, this shows someone walking around with a camcorder, recording street musicians and performances in the Thai province of Isan. It's true Isan is more than just a warm electronic duo on Morr Music, it's a forgotten part of Thailand where folklore is still rich and powerful and traditions from different cultures have been bent and blended. I can't say the entire DVD is all watchable, there's some serious shaky-cam action at times, but this is a look in to an unseen part of the world, and for the most part it is revelatory. We see old men jamming on genuinely alien-looking instruments and get a look into the sleazy underbelly of local Gentlemen's clubs, all sound-tracked by what sounds to me like out-there psychedelic rock music. After watching this in fact I wouldn't mind jetting off to Thailand and seeing it first hand, of course if anyone would care to sponsor me?? Recommended viewing!
