SONGS FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART - Songs For The Young At Heart, Lucky Dog

Finally back in stock! If you're one of the seemingly endless number of people who rushed to snap up Bonnie Prince Billy's genius 7" under the "Songs for The Young At Heart" moniker last year, here at long last is the full album! Tindersticks lads Stuart Staples and David Boulter have compiled this gorgeous collection and it comes housed in a children's book - you know the kind that each page is a super-thick piece of card so your little terrors can't tear it to tiny bits. I don't know how they managed to afford this but it looks simply lavish, and obviously, it marries marvellously with the subject matter. The aforementioned Bonnie Prince Billy cover version of 'Puff the Magic Dragon' is included here, as well as contributions from a whole host of luminaries and artistes who seem to share the same child-like passion for the source material. Now I'm far too young to remember most of these childrens songs, but they must have sunk into the collective subconscious as i can hum a long to most of them on first listen. Each artist Staples and Boulter have convinced to contribute manages to retain that all-important innocence and purity - and what makes this more than a mere throw-away novelty record is a dark sense of melancholy, a sense that in this glorious nostalgia we are lamenting a time and an innocence long gone, never to return. There is a feeling that Staples and Boulter are doing this not to re-capture the lost childhood, but to show new generations what childhood used to be, what it can't be anymore. Even as Jarvis Cocker carefully narrates 'The Lion and Albert' there is a deep sense of loss in the childish tale. Elsewhere we have contributions from Lambchop's Kurt Wagner, ex-Catatonia frontwoman Cerys Matthews, The Triffids' Robert Forster, Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch and more, and each artist puts their mark on a familiar tune. Like the best children's stories, 'Songs for the Young at Heart' is an album which stays with you, which digs its claws into your subconscious and doesn't let go. Whether you've heard the songs or not, it's impossible not to be won over by these sentimental, addictive renditions - who knows, it might even nudge you into re-discovering your dusty Lego set again.... Utterly lovely.
