VARIOUS / SPEKK - Small Melodies, SPEKK

Back in stock. 'Small Melodies' is Japanese minimal label Spekk's one and only compilation, a collection of exclusive tracks from the finest names in the genre. How they've managed to rope in such a stellar collection of artists is beyond me, we've got Oren Ambarchi, Sogar, Ultra Milkmaids, Taylor Deupree, Tape, Fenton (Shuttle 358), Stephan Mathieu, Anderegg (Mountains), Herve Boghossian and more, and what's more it's all great. Yes 'Small Melodies' is that rarest of things, a compilation that truly flows and will have you returning time and time again. It's funny but since the 'Clicks and Cuts' compilations tailed off there haven't been any really high quality documents of the scene, and as we are all well aware the scene has moved on quite significantly since 2000. Indeed, 'Small Melodies' incorporates the organic sound we have seen come to fruition in the last seven years, with Tape providing a sublime piece of guitar/laptop collision guaranteed to get your heart racing and Dan Abrams (Shuttle 358) under his under-appreciated Fenton moniker showing how adept he is at writing sublime crumbling organic music. There's rarely a dull moment on this jam packed cd actually, and with highlights from the ever-reliable Oren Ambarchi (has this man ever produced a duff track?) and a breathtaking climax from Stephan Mathieu I think there should be no reason not to snap this up pretty sharpish. Absolutely lovely, buy!
