GUI BORATTO - Chromophobia, Kompakt

Back in stock. Gui Boratto is one of those artists who other artists love. With a string of releases spread across labels such as K2, Audiomatique, Plastic City and Kompakt, Boratto is a permanent fixture in end-of-year polls - with the likes of Michael Mayer, Tiefschwarz, Steve Bug, Phonique, Martin Landsky and Hernan Cattaneo all tipping their hats in the direction of the Brazilian based auteur. Yet whilst this kind of incestuous praise can often leave those on the outside feeling a little cold, Boratto's endearing productions make him a highlight of the Kompakt roster - with 'Chromophobia' a fantastic and varied confection of styles, gunning its way through the dance music canon with an infectious grace and evident glee. With Sao Paulo humidity evident throughout, 'Chromophobia' opens through the synth freefall of 'Scene 1'; wherein cold water keys and Giorgio Moroder-esque chord structures give the impression of some great, lost soundtrack from the 1980's. As a musical prologue it is pitched perfectly - buoying the mood whilst hinting at darker avenues to explore, all wrapped in solipsistic synths of the highest quality. Bleached with emotion throughout, Boratto immediately contrasts the warm glow of 'Scene 1' with the rotating minimalism of 'Mr. Decay' - a track which could readily have been culled from classic Plastikman, as a bouncing cyclone of beats coalesce around a clinical metal heart. Proving once again that those who accuse techno of being unable to produce a decent full length LP are barking up the wrong tree, as 'Terminal 7' steps in with rubbery bass and delicate melodies galore, before 'Gate 7' whips up maximum chaos through a bleached membrane of creamy static and Teflon beats. Elsewhere, the title track is a mutating monster - wherein real instrumentation broods magically behind the spindle of beats -, 'Beautiful Life' gets all epic pop on your ass with vocodors and soundscapes galore, whilst 'The Blessing' is Tejada-style aquatic tech. Closing with the pink hued shades of 'The Verdict', Boratto has delivered on his vinyl promise with an album that will seduce you on first listen. X & Y!
