One of the world's finest accordionists, Frode Haltli has spent time playing as part of Trygve Seim's ensemble, Norwegian noise supergroup, No Spaghetti Edition and more regularly, as part of the chamber trio, Poing (who do a mean cover of Metallica's 'One', let me tell you). Passing Images is Haltli's second solo album for ECM and features contributions from Garth Knox on viola, plus those luminaries of the Rune Grammofon stable, Arve Henriksen and Maja Ratkje, with the former providing his uniquely ethereal trumpet skills, the latter lending her astonishing vocal improvisations in addition to composing the album's title track. Much of the music here is inspired or directly sourced from traditional Norwegian (and in one instance, Swedish) music, with Haltli learning this repertoire first hand from folk musicians. His arrangements of these traditional songs showcase an incredibly lyrical accordion style, which is uniquely his own. The very fact that the three Norwegian performers on this album have rewritten the rulebook with regards to their instrument of choice means that there's a distinct lack of reverence on this album, which is unusual for the ordinarily rather sober, cerebral world of ECM releases, but that's not to say that the artists involved aren't serious academic musicians. Ratkje's aforementioned 'Passing Images' finds Haltli expanding the conventional vocabulary of the accordion to incorporate wildly difficult, disjointed passages. An eccentric yet hugely rewarding listen.
