BACK IN STOCK. Film scores have always been something of a passion of mine, and I never find myself quite so passionate about 70s early electronic gems - the sort of time when people simply weren't sure what they were doing with electronic equipment, which gave birth to some quite devastating soundtracks. Stanley Myers, who is probably best known for his crucial Deer Hunter score, put together this quite remarkable work for the film Sitting Target, a lesser known British B-Movie which is probably most notorious for being the first R-Rated British film (and which prompted large-scale discussions about cenroship) but clearly by the sounds of this, what is most important about the film is its soundtrack. It might not be the best known of Myers' work, but just listen to the opening track and main theme and a guarantee you'll be hooked - coming somewhere in-between Italian synth-prog legends Goblin's incredible giallo work and John Barry's markedly English-sounding score for the Ipcress File this is a joy from start to finish. We've got orchestral parts draped in synthesized drones and bassy blips, haunted drones sitting alongside delicately tweaked electric guitar - honestly this record is a joy to listen to, with or without the film and is easily one of the finest things to emerge from the stunning Finders Keepers label. It's a knowingly odd and unwieldy score, with little nods to genre stereotypes turned on their head with ease and grace, and I am left wondering why I hadn't heard of this before - it's just so damn good. If you've got any interest in film scores or simply damn fine atmospheric music then you should know what to do - huge recommendation.
