Hisato Higuchi once had a career as a puppeteer. It probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch to relate the subtle hand gestures of that craft to his current occupation as ethereal blues guitarist. These phantom-like guitar pieces are clearly heavily informed by Loren Connors' ghostly works, but in addition to the delicate, maudlin guitar passages, some of the music here is augmented by Higuchi's voice, which follows a similarly unearthly trajectory. His hushed, wordless vocals are more breath and mic noise than larynx, and when married to the skeletal, muted guitar tones there's a magical desolation at work. Spellbindingly beautiful material here, executed with the most measured sense of economy and phrasing. Excellent.
