You probably know by now we've got more than just a soft spot for good quality post-rock - yes we're Mogwai fetishists and we're not afraid to show it, so when Mono appeared on the map a few years ago we were all there, rabid to see where exactly Japan's instrumental rock troubadours would end up - and it's hardly a surprise to see them now welcomed into the loving arms of filmmaker Cameron Crowe. Yep the same guy that brought you Vanilla Sky and, erm, Elizabethtown runs a label, and with his unashamed love of Sigur Ros confirmed, it seems he's moving farther a field by taking Mono into the fray. It's a darned good move too as the band turn in one of their finest tracks yet - the utterly crushing ten-minute long 'Memorie Del Futuro', a track that sounds something like as if Michael Nyman was to suddenly write post rock. Those soaring strings, those wailing guitars - it's emotional and it's dramatic but thankfully it doesn't layer it on and opt for the everlasting crescendo in the same way as our Icelandic friends. The key is subtlety, which is only too often lost in the land of post-rock, but Mono here manage it in a way they've never really quite done before, and as the distorted guitars and gorgeous violins fade out you are left with a gaping hole in your heart. Of course this is disgracefully limited and you're likely never to see it pop up again so you'd better act fast.
