Noisy experimental rock music, we’ve got a lot to thank Sonic Youth for, and now their mainman Thurston Moore is keeping the genre alive with his frankly essential Ecstatic Peace label. Part of the genius of the label is that most of the time there are names you’ve never heard before – proof if ever it was needed that the man still has his ear to the ground and is still actively looking for acts that excite him (and us), something that simply has to be commended. This latest release is from avant rock supremos JD King and the Coachmen and interestingly enough The Coachmen were Thurston’s pre-Sonic Youth project along with his good friend J.D King, but split unceremoniously in 1979 leaving history to run it’s course. Now Thurston’s back on the case supporting the band that introduced him to so much, and although he’s no longer a member that incredibly diverse, unrepentant sentiment is still omnipresent throughout. There are Dead C style noisy tape recorded passages, glorious droning ambience and classic garage rock and everything is approached with the utmost restraint, something missing from the current scourge of acts. This might not be the most obvious of releases this week, it might not be something that jumps out at you unless you’re already aware of the band but I urge you to give it a try – avant rock rarely sounded this tantalising. Highly recommended.
