On 'Protection Racket', Mercury-nominated Irish songwriter Fionn Regan goes electric, and here he's aiming for a recession-era stab at something approaching Highway 61-era Dylan, which inviting a comparison which only illuminates his shortcomings as a writer - not that such illuminations were ever necessary so long as he's making wince-worthy anti-big business statements like "These big companies/Are giving us the squeeze/Let's raise our glasses to Mr. Onassis". Zing! In your face corporate imperialism, you just got served. He sings this more than once, it should be noted. By this point you're halfway between laughing in his face and thinking, well bless him for trying; most people wouldn't even bother going on record about the times they live in, so good for him. Acoustic B-side 'Genocide Matinee' is closer in temperament to material on The End Of History, and there's some nifty fingerpicking, but once again the lyrics demonstrate laudable ambition whilst keenly flirting with creative disaster. Regardless, I for one shall greet the ensuing album with great interest...
