J. P. Shilo is a pseudonym of John Brooks, formerly of the instrumental group Hungry Ghosts, who split back in 2000. A fan from way back, Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley has put his money where his mouth is and released this debut solo album on his own Smells Like Records label. The music on "As Happy As Sad Is Blue" is hard to categorize. For one thing, it doesn’t sound like it comes from any one particular genre, or even any particular period in time. The title track could be lifted from some ‘60s library record found in an attic somewhere, whilst the mono, primitive musique concrete of ‘Insects Eating Into Insects’ sounds far older and way more abstract. The one common factor to these recordings is the hazy, unstable production, which is most effective on pieces that really command a higher fidelity recording, such as the elegiac strings and piano piece, ‘Grave’. Here the delicate arrangements are consumed by a smudgy tape hiss that only enhances a sense of understated grandeur. The album closes with the bottleneck blues of ‘High Inner Tree’ bringing proceedings to a suitably beautiful conclusion.
