STARLESS & BIBLE BLACK - Starless & Bible Black, Locust

This Manchester five-piece have done well to find a home at Locust Music. The Chicago label is an ever-reliable outlet for precisely the sort of rootsy American folk the band reference on their eponymous debut. Ranging from the infectious banjo shuffle of opening track, 'Everyday and Everynight', through the jazzy, Pentangle-influenced 'B.B.' to the epic country rock of '016-013', there's really no faulting the group's musicianship and songwriting abilities. For an album that features a breadth of different takes on contemporary nu-folk sounds, taking in some diverse approaches to arrangement along the way (even incorporating electronic elements when the occasion calls for it), Starless & Bible Black are equally effective when paring a song down to its very core. 'Sirene' is a simply gorgeous vocal and guitar piece, with singer Helene Gaultier's voice rested hauntingly atop the most minimal of plucked backdrops, evoking an eerie Wicker Man feel. An extremely promising debut indeed.
