FELIX KUBIN
Schnitzler Pop
7"
You always know you’re going to get something a bit special with a Felix Kubin release, the man has been more than influential in his scene, managing the insanely difficult task of making experimental music actually sound like fun. Okay so he does resort to pop quite unashamedly but we can’t begrudge him that, Kubin’s pop is not like much you’ve ever heard before. Now the uber-talented musical mentalist has been enlisted by none other than his uncle, Walter Knoth to illustrate his old Schlager texts but due to his age Knoth felt that maybe it would be a little too much of a task to handle on his own. The story goes that adverts were placed in many a German music magazine before they stumbled upon Coolhaven, an eclectic trio introduced to Kubin and his uncle by Frans De Waard. The four musicians eventually got together and had an intensive week of recording and then 18 months and a hell of a lot of mixing later here we have it, a fractured pop record of the highest order. Taking in electropop, noise, Krautrock, electronica, free jazz, Balkan folk, traditional German music and punk can’t be an easy task but somehow this utterly bonkers mix comes out smiling and unscathed. There’s no way on earth that describing this would work – it sounds like nothing you’ve heard and is maybe best compared to being stranded in a very frightening fairground, clowns taunting you and candyfloss stuck to your mouth. I’m worried but intrigued simultaneously… and that’s a very nice place to be let me tell you. Wonderfully bizarre!
