It Happened On A Day
10"
A wonderfully sublime slice of tangled, rural post-folk from America and one of those albums that crops up every now and again and leaves us unexpectedly breathless. P.G. Six might be better known to avant-garde heads among you as the leading light of free-folk staples the Tower Recordings. Come on, I know you have a shedload of handmade cdrs lying around somewhere! Originally written to be played alongside an exhibition by visual artist Christine Krol called (surprisingly) the Sherman Box Series, the most surprising thing about this album is how well it runs out of the context in which it was intended to be heard. Never once do you get the feeling that the album is too arty or too esoteric for it's own good, rather it has a distinct narrative and is engaging from the first minute to the last. If any of you fell in love as I did with the works of Stephen R. Smith (aka Hala Strana) then you might well know what to expect - crumbling guitar and miscellaneous world instrument experimentations recorded to tape and lightly processed to create mysterious blackened domains, rich with wonder and abandonment. Simple traditional folk structures are utilised so we have the distinct echoes of times past, yet at no point does this sound like a collection of simple renditions, rather it feels as if the ghosts of our forefathers haunt the quarter inch tape. This is a simply gorgeous album that is as quietly daring as it is accessible, we implore you to give it a listen.
