COLD CAVE - Death Comes Close, Matador

This is an ultra-limited 12" accompanying Matador's re-release of the universally acclaimed Cold Cave album Love Comes Close, featuring the title track backed with the three bonus tracks exclusive to this release. What sets this band apart from all the other synth-pop and cold wave revivalists is the intense darkness at the heart of everything they do - no matter how poppy they may superficially appear, each track is entrenched in the same sort of noise/industrial-era grammar of Whitehouse, Throbbing Gristle and early Current 93. 'Love Comes Close' is not without its Ian Curtis-isms, and Wesley Eisold (the band's founder and lynchpin) fronts the record as the ideal austere, yet pop-savvy helmsman. In terms of additional tracks, the selection here is pretty immense: 'Double Lives In Single Beds' glows with washes of dark synth loveliness and 'Theme From Tomorrowland' bumps along like a euphoric, demonic Vince Clarke production. As a parting shot the more abrasive, sonically entangled 'Now That I'm In The Future' makes a glorious noise, propelled by hiccuping, distressed machine beats and caked in snarling layers of fizz. A great short-form introduction to the band and the ideal completist's package for those of you who picked up the album first time around before Matador reissued it with the bonus cuts. Awesome.
