WAX POETICS - Issue 19 - OCT/NOV 2006, Wax Poetics

There's a timbale rockin' heavy brazil versus Puerto Rico latin salsa funk blast to this new issue of our fave the Wax P. The godfather of latin soul and boogaloo Joe Bataan features on the front cover while the kooooooooollll DJ Red Alert features on the alternate back cover, yes indeed NY Stand Up. As i'm personally going through a late sixties / early seventies NY salsa thang at the moment this issue is timed perfectly (it also coincides with the mammoth Fania and sub labels remastering CD reissue program fuelled by Emusica). The rediscovery section features five blinding latin albums including a fave of mine by Roberto Roena '5'. Later an amazing photo essay from the archives of Fania Records plus a deep interview with Joe Bataan the man who nearly single handed kept Fania rolling in loot until the time came for him to break off and launch Salsoul. This issue also sadly has to pay tribute to more recently lost greats, this time Atlantic records man Arif Mardin and the one and only jazz bagpiper Rufus Harley. Next an amazing history lesson with Brazil's electric funksters Azymuth plus interview then onto an essay of Columbia's dancefloor roots, the album covers rock, especially the Fruko El Bueno ones. The man behind the boards for the amazing Kenny Clarke / Francy Bolland Big Band albums, Mr Gigi Campi in interview. Richard Pryor's albums reviewed and Hugh Masekela interviewed plus Dave Katz grills the main Dr, Alimantado. You even get to read about the B-More sound that inspired Diplo, Spank Rock et' all, hats off to Unruly Records. Rushing towards the conclusion with the one and only DJ Red Alert and DJ Food's fave cut up works. Finally a look at the home of a true record collector (and I thought I had issues). Almost my favourite ever issue, possible only bettered by Issue 9. Inspiring, unmissable bedtime reading.
